Thierry Henry has shared his view on the long-running debate over football’s greatest player, choosing not to separate Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo. The Arsenal and France legend likened their rivalry to tennis icons Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal, saying both belong in a category of their own.

A rivalry beyond comparison
Speaking at an event in London during an interview with Marca, Henry dismissed the idea of naming a single GOAT. He argued that fans should appreciate both players instead of dividing them.
Henry explained: “It is a mistake. Why do people want to separate them, if they can enjoy them all? Of course, I played with Leo, and I prefer him for a sentimental reason, but that's why I will never go against Cristiano. Both are on the football moon. They are from another planet.”
He further compared them to legendary sporting rivalries, adding that Messi and Ronaldo have elevated each other much like Federer and Nadal, as well as other historic duels such as Prost and Senna.
Respect for unmatched longevity
Henry also highlighted what he believes is the most impressive part of their careers: consistency at the top level over nearly two decades.
“They are not normal,” he said. “It’s not just about goals or records. I am amazed by their longevity.”
He credited their sustained success to discipline and lifestyle choices, pointing to strict routines, training habits, and professionalism off the pitch.
According to Henry, their commitment includes proper nutrition, avoiding distractions, strong family focus, and relentless training.
A historic statistical rivalry
The numbers behind Messi and Ronaldo’s careers continue to define football history.
Messi has won eight Ballon d’Or awards, four FIFA The Best titles, ten La Liga championships, four UEFA Champions League trophies, and the 2022 World Cup with Argentina.
Ronaldo, meanwhile, has claimed five Ballon d’Or awards and three FIFA The Best prizes. He has also lifted five Champions League titles and won league trophies in England, Spain, and Italy, alongside the 2016 European Championship with Portugal.
Approaching the final chapter
As both legends near the end of their careers, their motivation remains strong. Ronaldo is closing in on 1000 career goals while still chasing World Cup success. Messi, on the other hand, aims for another major international triumph after Argentina’s recent glory.
