Following a tense encounter in Houston, Portugal were held by a resilient DR Congo side after Yoane Wissa cancelled out an early goal. Despite visibly showing his frustration at full-time and heading straight down the tunnel, Ronaldo later spoke to Sport TV while signing autographs, offering a firm defence of the team’s performance.

When asked what was missing from Portugal’s display, Ronaldo was direct in his assessment:
“What was missing? Nothing was missing, this is football. Portugal could have won, but also could have lost. It could have gone either way,”
His comments reflected his belief that the match was evenly balanced, despite Portugal failing to secure all three points.
The forward later addressed fans on social media, acknowledging the setback but calling for unity and focus. He wrote:
“It was not the start we wanted, but this is far from over”
He also urged the squad to maintain belief and concentration, adding:
“head up and focus on the next game.”
The match also marked a historic appearance for Ronaldo, as he extended his record as one of the oldest players to represent Portugal, surpassing former teammate Pepe, who watched from the stands. The Al-Nassr forward also equalled Lionel Messi for the most World Cup finals appearances, with both icons now featuring in six editions.
He also became the second-oldest outfield player in World Cup history, behind Cameroonian legend Roger Milla, who set his record in 1994.
Despite these milestones, Ronaldo endured a difficult match, missing several key chances and extending his goal drought in major international tournaments to 10 consecutive games.
Portugal coach Roberto Martinez now faces the task of lifting his squad ahead of their next Group K fixtures. Portugal will next meet Uzbekistan before concluding their group stage campaign against Colombia, where their knockout hopes will be decided.
