The 23-year-old attacking midfielder was reportedly attracted by Chelsea’s project under new head coach Xabi Alonso, who played a key role in convincing Rogers to join the Blues.
Chelsea Break British Transfer Record with Morgan Rogers Deal
According to a report by The Athletic, Chelsea have accelerated their summer transfer plans by reaching a verbal agreement with Aston Villa for the signing of Rogers.
The deal, worth £117 million, will make Rogers the most expensive player in Chelsea’s history. The fee surpasses the previous British record of £116 million, which Manchester City recently agreed for Nottingham Forest midfielder Elliot Anderson.
It also exceeds the £106 million Chelsea paid to sign Enzo Fernandez in 2023.
Personal terms have already been agreed with Rogers, who is expected to sign a long-term contract at Stamford Bridge running until 2032. The agreement also includes an option for an additional 12 months.
A medical has been scheduled for Monday as Chelsea prepare to complete the final stages of the transfer before officially unveiling their new signing.
Xabi Alonso Influence Helps Chelsea Beat Arsenal
The battle for Rogers’ signature was highly competitive, with Arsenal strongly linked with a move for the talented midfielder.
However, the England star ultimately decided to join Chelsea, with the opportunity to work under Xabi Alonso becoming one of the major reasons behind his decision.
The former Bayer Leverkusen manager played an important role in presenting Chelsea’s sporting vision to Rogers, who viewed Stamford Bridge as his preferred destination despite interest from several top clubs in the Premier League and Europe.
Morgan Rogers Leaves Aston Villa After Outstanding Rise
Rogers departs Aston Villa as an established star after producing impressive numbers during his time at Villa Park.
The midfielder recorded 31 goals and 29 assists in 125 appearances for the club. His rapid rise followed his move from Middlesbrough for just £7 million in early 2024.
Middlesbrough are also set to benefit from the transfer, with the Championship club holding a 20 per cent sell-on clause.
Rogers leaves Villa after helping the club achieve major success, including a Europa League title and Champions League qualification. During the 2025-26 campaign, he contributed 14 goals and 12 assists.
Rogers Shines for England at World Cup Before Chelsea Move
Rogers has continued his impressive form while representing England at the World Cup.
The midfielder featured in the first six matches of the Three Lions’ campaign, including starts against Panama and Argentina. He also delivered the crucial cross that allowed Anthony Gordon to score England’s only goal in their semi-final match.
Rogers is also included in the starting XI for England’s third-place play-off against France.
Following the conclusion of his international commitments, he will return to complete his record-breaking transfer to Chelsea.
Aston Villa Begin Plans Without Morgan Rogers
Aston Villa are preparing for life after Rogers following his huge transfer to Chelsea.
Although losing such an influential player is a major setback for Unai Emery’s side, the Midlands club is already planning how to use the significant financial boost from the deal.
Villa had been expecting a major offer for Rogers after his performances and were reportedly holding out for a fee above £100 million.
The club has already invested more than £50 million in Johan Manzambi and completed a £35 million deal for Wolves midfielder Joao Gomes as they prepare for another competitive Champions League campaign.
Emery’s recruitment team is also targeting players including Crysencio Summerville and Ibrahim Mbaye to strengthen the club’s wide attacking options.
