In this exclusive conversation with Sport Crave, Umar opens up about how his journey with basketball began, what keeps him motivated and what he hopes the future holds for his career.
Sport Crave: Umar, tell us about yourself and your basketball journey.
Umar “Mai Yaki” Muhammed: My name is Umar Muhammed, but many people know me as “Mai Yaki.” I am a basketball player from Niger, Nigeria, and right now I am in Abuja, where I am continuing to pursue my passion for the game.
Basketball has become a very important part of my life. I enjoy playing, learning and improving every day. I know I still have a lot to learn and many areas where I can become better, but I am committed to the journey.
Sport Crave: How did you first fall in love with basketball?
Umar: My love for basketball developed from being around the game and watching people play. At some point, I became interested in the sport and wanted to understand it more.
The more I played, the more I enjoyed it. Basketball became something I wanted to dedicate myself to. It is a game that challenges you physically and mentally, and I really enjoy that aspect of it.
Over time, it stopped being just something I played for fun. I started seeing basketball as something I could build a future around.
Sport Crave: What do you love most about basketball?
Umar: I love the competition and the energy of the game. Basketball requires you to stay focused, work with your teammates and make decisions quickly.
I also love the feeling of improving. When you work on something and eventually get better at it, it gives you confidence and motivates you to keep going.
Sport Crave: You are originally from Niger but are currently in Abuja. How important has this journey been for you?
Umar: It has been important because every environment gives you a different experience. Being in Abuja gives me the opportunity to continue working on myself and my basketball.
I am focused on using every opportunity I have to grow as a player. I want to keep training, keep learning and keep putting myself in situations where I can improve.
Sport Crave: What are your biggest ambitions in basketball?
Umar: My ambition is to become the best basketball player I can be. I want to continue improving and hopefully reach a professional level where I can compete at the highest possible level.
I also want to make my family, my community and the people who believe in me proud. I know the journey will not always be easy, but I am ready to work for it.
Sport Crave: What do you think the future holds for you?
Umar: I believe the future is bright if I continue to work hard and remain focused. I don't want to put a limit on what I can achieve.
My immediate focus is to keep developing my skills and becoming a better player. I want to take things step by step, gain more experience and continue moving forward.
In the future, I would love to play at a very high level and represent myself, Niger and Nigeria on bigger platforms.
Sport Crave: What message would you give to other young basketball players chasing their dreams?
Umar: I would tell them to believe in themselves and never give up. You have to be ready to work hard because talent alone is not enough.
There will be difficult moments, but you have to stay focused and keep improving. Listen to people who want to help you, learn from your mistakes and always try to become better than you were yesterday.
