Harry Kane Reveals Why England Struggled Against Ghana in Goalless World Cup Draw

Harry Kane has acknowledged that Ghana's disciplined defensive display played a major role in England being held to a 0-0 draw in their second World Cup match.

The England captain endured a quiet evening in front of goal, with Ghana successfully restricting his movement and limiting clear-cut opportunities.

Compact Ghana Defence Restricts Three Lions

Following an entertaining 4-2 victory over Croatia, expectations were high for England heading into the clash. Kane had scored twice in that opening triumph, while Jude Bellingham and Marcus Rashford were also among the goals.

Yet Ghana, under the guidance of Carlos Queiroz, produced a resilient defensive performance. Their compact shape denied England space in dangerous areas and prevented the Three Lions from replicating the attacking display shown in their previous outing.

The statistics reflected Kane's struggles, as the striker managed only three touches inside Ghana's penalty area.

England Captain Addresses Missed Opportunity

The defining moment arrived late in the game after Nico O'Reilly's header rebounded off the crossbar and landed at Kane's feet. The striker was unable to turn the chance into the winning goal.

Reflecting on the opportunity, Kane said: "You go through games like that. I was just waiting for an opportunity like that to fall my way. It was the kind of game as a striker where you're just waiting for the ball to bounce, and it did. I just couldn't quite get over the ball, but I'd back myself to score that more often than not. It is what it is. I've been a striker long enough to know they don't always go in, so I have to accept it."

Kane Details Ghana's Tactical Approach

Kane explained that Ghana's strategy centred on limiting the space available to him, with Thomas Partey assigned to closely track his movements.

"I was almost man-marked by [Thomas] Partey for a lot of the game. I didn't really have the space to drop deep and then arrive late in the box, and they also defended the box well," Kane added. "We had plenty of crosses, but we just couldn't quite get the first contact. The balls through the middle were tough to play because it was so compact in there."

Attention Turns to Panama

Although England were unable to secure all three points, they remain in a strong position at the top of Group L with four points. Ghana are level on points but trail on goal difference, while Croatia are one point behind and Panama sit at the bottom of the standings.

England's next challenge comes against Panama, with top spot in Group L still firmly within reach should the Three Lions claim victory.
