Following Arsenal’s 2-1 aggregate win, confirmed by Bukayo Saka’s decisive goal on Tuesday, Martinez-Almeida publicly questioned the fairness of the competition. He argued that Atletico were not simply facing Mikel Arteta’s team but were instead battling against decisions influenced by European football’s governing authority.

In remarks delivered on Wednesday, the mayor expressed disbelief over the circumstances surrounding the match. He suggested that from the moment the draw was made, the outcome seemed predetermined, insisting Atletico were effectively competing against UEFA rather than their on-field opponents. He also criticized the choice of a German referee, highlighting the context of Spain and Germany contesting a Champions League qualification spot.

The officiating appointments became a central focus of his criticism. Martinez-Almeida questioned the logic behind selecting both a German match referee and VAR official for such a crucial fixture, implying that the decision created an unfair disadvantage for Atletico. He maintained that certain match incidents appeared influenced by prior intentions rather than objective refereeing decisions.

One of the key flashpoints involved a challenge by Riccardo Calafiori on Giuliano Simeone. Atletico’s penalty appeal was dismissed due to an offside call, but the mayor argued that the lack of televised replays raised suspicions. He claimed that footage later circulating online suggested the decision may have been incorrect and accused broadcasters of failing to provide clarity.

Another disputed moment came from a separate penalty claim involving Antoine Griezmann, which was also waved away. Martinez-Almeida further pointed to the amount of stoppage time added as additional evidence supporting his belief that the match was handled with bias.

Despite acknowledging that Arsenal could have been beaten under normal conditions, the mayor insisted that overcoming what he described as institutional interference was impossible. He concluded that Atletico fans should feel proud of their team, as he believed they had faced forces beyond just their opponents on the pitch.
