Spain clinched their place in the semi-finals of the Nations League after a dramatic 5-4 penalty shootout victory over the Netherlands. The thrilling encounter, which ended 4-4 on aggregate, saw La Roja triumph in a nail-biting shootout after an action-packed 120 minutes at De Kuip.

The first leg of the quarter-final had ended in a 2-2 draw, with Mikel Merino's injury-time goal rescuing the defending champions. Heading into the second leg, Spain was determined to take control, starting strong with a dominating possession game. Their efforts paid off early when Mikel Oyarzabal won a penalty after being fouled by Jan Paul van Hecke. The Real Sociedad forward coolly slotted it past Bart Verbruggen to give Spain an aggregate lead.
Despite Spain's dominance, Nico Williams missed two clear chances to extend their lead, with Verbruggen making brilliant saves to keep the scoreline at 1-0 at halftime.
The Netherlands came out fiercely in the second half. Unai Simon made an impressive save to deny Justin Kluivert, but Memphis Depay quickly equalized with a penalty after a foul by Spain. The Dutch brought the aggregate score level, but Spain regained the initiative through a sublime run from Williams, who assisted Oyarzabal for a second goal, restoring Spain's advantage.
However, the Dutch were not done. A quick counter-attack found debutant Ian Maatsen, who struck a powerful equalizer, forcing extra time with the score tied at 4-4 on aggregate.
The first half of extra time saw both teams adopt a cautious approach, but Spain regained the lead thanks to a moment of brilliance from Lamine Yamal. The Barcelona prodigy controlled a long ball from Dean Huijsen and curled it into the far corner, giving Spain a 5-4 advantage. Despite a valiant effort, the Netherlands equalized once more when Xavi Simons won and converted a penalty, pushing the match to a tense shootout.
In the ensuing penalty shootout, the teams were neck-and-neck, with both sides missing one spot kick. It all came down to sudden death, where Donyell Malen missed for the Netherlands, allowing Pedri to score the decisive penalty for Spain, sealing the victory.
Alvaro Morata, who had missed the first leg due to illness, returned to the squad but was only fit enough for a spot on the bench. With Morata sidelined, Oyarzabal once again stepped up, delivering a penalty and an opportunistic finish in the makeshift No. 9 role. Pedri’s second-half introduction injected new energy into Spain's attack, providing the creative spark that ultimately made the difference.
With this dramatic win, Spain sets up a semi-final clash against France, the 2021 Nations League winners, who triumphed over Croatia in their quarter-final shootout. The two sides will meet on June 4, with the venue set to be either Turin or Munich.
