Romero Reacts After Tottenham’s 2-2 Draw and Frustrating Transfer Deadline
Tottenham Hotspur skipper Cristian Romero has delivered a striking message following his side’s 2-2 Premier League stalemate with Manchester City, which came immediately after the January transfer window closed. Spurs are grappling with a severe injury situation, yet only two first-team players were added to Thomas Frank’s squad, a situation that has clearly angered the Argentine defender.

The north London club’s recent performances have been troubling under Frank. Despite trailing City by two goals, Spurs managed to salvage a draw at home, even while dealing with a lengthy injury list containing 13 players. Among those sidelined are James Maddison, Dejan Kulusevski, Mohammed Kudus and Richarlison, with Romero himself forced off at half-time due to illness.
Following the match, Romero took to Instagram to air his feelings toward the club’s hierarchy now that the transfer window has shut. Of the two signings made, Conor Gallagher featured against City, while the other addition, Souza, arrived as a teenage left-back from Brazil.
Frank has since defended Tottenham’s approach to recruitment, insisting the process is far from straightforward. He stressed that everyone connected with the club wants success, but emphasized that transfers cannot be treated like a video game. According to the Spurs boss, the market requires patience, skill, and long-term planning rather than impulsive decisions.
Romero’s social media post praised his teammates’ commitment, describing their performance as exceptional. He revealed that he pushed himself to be available despite feeling unwell, pointing out that the squad had just 11 players ready, calling the situation “unbelievable” and “disgraceful.” The defender reaffirmed the team’s determination to stay united, work hard, and thanked supporters for their continued backing.
Meanwhile, Frank also disclosed that Tottenham had tried to sign Antoine Semenyo from Bournemouth before his eventual move to Manchester City. The winger found the net at the weekend, having also scored against Spurs in his final appearance for Bournemouth.
Frank explained that the club, including Johan Lange, Fabio Paritici and Vinai Venkatesham, worked tirelessly to strengthen the squad but refused to compromise future plans for a short-term solution. He confirmed that the Lewis family remains fully committed and revealed that Spurs had pushed hard to land Semenyo, a deal that would have involved significant finances.
The manager added that Tottenham are targeting players of high quality and would rather wait than make the wrong choices. Should no further signings arrive, Frank expects major improvements during what he described as a crucial summer window.
Looking ahead, Spurs face a daunting run of fixtures in February. After meeting City, they are set to play Manchester United, Newcastle United and Arsenal consecutively. Tottenham currently sit nine points above 18th-placed West Ham and trail fourth-placed Manchester United by 12 points, with United enjoying a three-match winning streak under Michael Carrick.
