Manchester United Wage Overhaul: Five Stars to Leave in £1m-Per-Week Shake-Up
Manchester United are gearing up for a sweeping financial restructure this summer, targeting the departure of five senior players to significantly reduce their wage commitments. The strategy is designed to trim more than £1 million per week from the payroll while creating room for a refreshed squad.

At Old Trafford, the anticipated exits involve several well-known first-team figures. Casemiro is already confirmed to leave once the season concludes, while Jadon Sancho is expected to move on permanently following the expiration of his current deal in June. The club is also pushing to turn existing loan arrangements into full transfers. Marcus Rashford, currently with Barcelona, and Rasmus Hojlund, on loan at Napoli, are among those considered expendable, alongside goalkeeper Andre Onana, who is spending the campaign at Trabzonspor.
By clearing high-earning veterans and loanees from the wage bill, United estimate annual savings of around £62 million during seasons when they compete in the Champions League. This approach is seen as crucial for meeting Profit and Sustainability Rules, while also allowing the club to pursue top-level talent in the next transfer window. Several exits are already confirmed, though others hinge on clauses being activated by clubs across Europe.
Despite sitting third in the Premier League, Manchester United face growing financial pressure tied to potential Champions League qualification. Entry into the competition automatically triggers a 25% salary increase for much of the squad. Combined with £190 million in transfer-related payments due this year, the need to offload players like Casemiro and Sancho becomes essential. The expected departure of Onana and revised contract terms for Harry Maguire form key parts of this financial plan. While Maguire is likely to remain on reduced wages, the savings could be redirected toward a new deal for Kobbie Mainoo and securing a long-term successor to Casemiro.
In terms of recruitment, United are prioritizing a replacement in midfield. Elliott Anderson of Nottingham Forest, Sandro Tonali from Newcastle, and Adam Wharton of Crystal Palace are all under consideration. The club may also pursue an additional central midfielder, particularly if Manuel Ugarte departs after struggling for consistency since his 2024 move from Paris Saint-Germain and seeking more regular playing time.
