With Nicolas Jackson currently leading the line, Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca is eager to bolster the club’s attacking options ahead of the upcoming FIFA Club World Cup in the United States.
Delap, formerly of Manchester City, is understood to have attracted interest from a number of Premier League clubs, including Manchester United, Arsenal, and Newcastle United. However, Chelsea's Champions League qualification and a more stable project under Maresca appear to have convinced Delap to choose West London over other suitors.
According to The Athletic’s David Ornstein, Delap is now prioritising a move to Chelsea. talkSPORT further reports that the club is pushing to finalize the deal before the Club World Cup begins. Though an agreement on personal terms remains outstanding, the west London club is confident of wrapping up the signing in the coming weeks.
Delap’s breakout season has seen him register double-digit goals and become a shining light in an otherwise difficult campaign for Ipswich Town. His physicality, pressing ability, and tactical intelligence are seen as perfect complements to Chelsea’s evolving attacking system under Maresca.
This potential acquisition marks a strategic move by Chelsea, who have also been linked with Viktor Gyokeres, Benjamin Sesko, and Hugo Ekitike in recent months.
